About the Project
2011 is the 50th anniversary of Peace Corps, the 41st anniversary of Earth Day, and the 23rd anniversary of the beginning of the Peace Corps World Map Project.
The Peace Corps world map mural has been painted on walls, floors, walkways, and virtually any flat surface since 1988, when PCV Barbara Jo White launched the idea in the Dominican Republic. If you have been thinking about doing one at your site, a great time to do it will be for Earth Day, 2011.
The weather will be beginning to warm up and hopefully some sunny days will allow the paint to dry. Preface the painting with a few educational classes on the Environment and get the students involved in doing the mural as a "final" and we will be well on our way to raising awareness of the environment and making a statement to the world about Ukraine and how it is learning to improve the Earth's Environment.
This is an opportunity to put Ukraine "on the map" by setting a record of the number of maps in a country served by Peace Corps and how we are raising awareness of the environment here. By collecting photos of the new and existing maps we can create a collage of the images for a poster/postcard. If each oblast completes just 2 maps that would be over 50 images.
How to Get Involved
The first step is to download the manual which will guide you through the actual creation of the map.
That's pretty much the only official step. The manual will help guide you through the many steps in creating the actual image. However, it is largely up to you and your Ukrainian counterparts as to how the map is realized.
If you are interested in participating in this venture, we will make sure you receive timely information on lesson plans and how to do the map as well as to make sure you will have a place in the "big picture".
